FMB backs MPs call for retrofit skills plan

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has backed a warning from the government that the UK will miss net-zero targets without greater investment in housing retrofits.

According to the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, the UK requires an additional 250,000 workers to meet new housing targets “alone” and many more for housing refits.

A deeper talent pool is required, according to the committee, to meet 2030 and 2050 decarbonised building targets.

The committee has called for ‘local skilled labour’ conditions in Contracts for Difference, an expanded skills passport scheme, a leading role for local authorities, and greater clarity for industry on levies, EPC ratings and the Warm Homes Plan.

FMB CEO Brian Berry gave evidence to the committee’s enquiry and has welcomed its findings, stressing the need for greater long-term certainty, practical support for SMEs and clearer career pathways.

“This is exactly the kind of bold intervention we need to tackle the skills crisis and deliver the government’s ambitious targets for clean energy and housing,” said Brian.

“Small builders are ready to play their part, but they need clarity, long-term certainty, and practical support to train the next generation.

“The UK is not going to be able to meet its housing and retrofit goals without investing in home-grown talent.”
